Weevil Wednesday

A metallic green beetle with a long snout stands on the edge of a green leaf.

She was unsure why or how, but Vera was always drawn to the leaf edge. No matter which way she had set out to travel, her feet, as if pulled by magnets, always brought her here. And then she’d stand, looking out at a world of many colors and experience an odd mix of melancholy and pride that she was and always would be a green weevil.

Weevils are a type of beetle and typically have long snouts, sometimes absurdly long. Those like Vera came from Europe and are now quite common in North America. There will likely be some in your yard this summer, hoping you’ll say hi or at least give a neighborly wave.

My mother’s name was almost Vera (Elvira), so now you’ve got me wondering if maybe she has come back in reincarnated form as a weevil (which thought leaves me somewhat confused). I sure hope that those who pass by do in fact say hi or give a neighbourly* wave and nothing more.

*in this delicate age of tariff tantrum tensions, it behooves me to point out that the Canadian way to spell “vecino” in English is “neighbour” with a “u”.
