First the update:
On the (exceedingly far) off chance that you’ve been asking yourself why you haven’t heard anything from this blog for while, I am here to assure you that I have not forgotten about it. However, crafting posts worth reading takes some measure of focused cognitive energy, and this resource has been in short supply outside of working hours. So, while I do still have ideas and thoughts, organizing them into something coherent is proving to be a challenge. When inspiration and energy align, I will once again subject you to my thoughts.
Second, the something new:
While I may not have much energy to draft blog entries, others continue to do great work with the English language. Thus, going forward I hope to regularly post on Sundays (though not necessarily every Sunday) a sentence I’ve read or heard in the past week (or at least recently) that is witty, insightful, deliciously crafted, or otherwise strikes my fancy. Each such post will be labeled as ‘Sunday Sentence’.
Despite today being a Monday, I had the idea yesterday, so have no qualms with offering my first Sunday Sentence here and now. It is courtesy of Amor Towles – one of my favorite current authors – from his novella ‘Eve in Hollywood’ (which can be found in his short story collection ‘Table for Two’):
While for his part, David barreled ahead, speaking with his trademark urgency, attention to detail, and utter disregard for whether what he was saying was furthering or confounding his purpose.
We’ve all known a David, haven’t we?
